A magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook much of the state of Hawaii on Friday night.

Very strong shaking was reported near the quake's epicenter, near the western edge of the Big Island, at 9:46 p.m. HST. Some shaking was felt on other Hawaiian islands, as far as Kauai. Minor to moderate damage is possible, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

An estimated 7,000 people experienced violent shaking, and 230,000 experienced light shaking.

A former Hawaii News Now reporter told the outlet that her "house was literally shaking from side to side, and ... it lasted for quite a long time."

The earthquake was recorded at a depth of 14 miles, and though it was along the western side of Mauna Loa, it was likely the result of "bending of the oceanic plate beneath the island chain and is not directly related to volcanic activity," the USGS said in a statement.

Several small aftershocks, one as high as 4.0, have been reported, and more are expected but will likely be so small they will barely be felt, if at all.

Moderate-magnitude earthquakes are common in Hawaii, the USGS said. "In the last 50 years, there have been 36 other earthquakes of magnitude 5 or greater within [60 miles] of the May 23, 2026, event."
