Street Abandoned: 6 Years of Floods Drove Out Every Family

One entire street of neighbors is being forced to leave because their homes keep flooding, year after year.

A row of 16 houses in Wales first flooded in February 2020 as a result of Storm Dennis. A tributary called Nant Clydach overflowed, deluging homes on Clydach Terrace with water, as reported by SWNS.

Then it happened again the next year.

And the next.

And three more years after that.

After the sixth flood in as many years, Natural Resources Wales deemed it "not economically viable" to build a wall to contain the stream when the waters rise. Instead, a local council agreed to buy most of the homes for 2.57 million pounds, according to the BBC. The row is expected to be demolished.

Resident Mike Preddy had lived there for 16 years, but many neighbors had been there for much longer, some as long as six decades.

"It's going to be sad, moving and seeing the homes destroyed, but it has to be done," Preddy said in a video interview.

Some residents told SWNS that the constant flooding had caused them to develop PTSD, anxiety and claustrophobia. Paul Thomas, who lived there 46 years, said moving was "bittersweet," but "necessary."

Preddy agreed.

“You can’t stay on a dangerous street because you’ve got memories," Preddy said. "Your life is more important.

“We can get on with what we want to do with our life instead of looking over our shoulders.”
