Heat indices will top 100s this week

Much of the U.S. will feel the sizzle this week as a heatwave builds from the Central U.S. to the East Coast, putting dozens of high temperature records in jeopardy.

Expect days of widespread temperatures in the 90s. Some places could see their "feels like" temperatures, or heat indices, top the triple digits.

South and Plains start the week hot

Monday and Tuesday, the heat will build across the South and Plains. Even places as far north as Rapid City will be in the 90s by Tuesday. Humidity will also play into the heat, so temperatures will feel even hotter.

Parts of the South, including much of western Texas, will be in the triple digits on Monday. Other areas that aren't in the triple digits will definitely feel like it when you factor in the humidity.

We could see records fall on Tuesday in places like Sioux Falls, Rapid City, North Platte, Denver and Dodge City.

Heat spreading east

For Wednesday, those 90s spread to the Ohio Valley. And by Thursday? The heat begins to peak in the Northeast.

Those 90s are expected to remain in the Northeast through the end of the week. These temperatures will be running 15 to 20 degrees above average.

Records could fall on Wednesday across parts of the Great Lakes and Plains. This includes places like Green Bay, Cleveland, Amarillo and Dodge City.

By Thursday and Friday, the record highs move to the East Coast. Many locations up and down the I-95 corridor could see record highs, from Richmond to New York City to parts of eastern Massachusetts.

Here's a look at where we could see records fall this week, from the Plains to the Northeast.

Where record highs could fall this week.

What is causing this heat?

The heat is set to be caused by a rather impressive ridge of high pressure. This ridge of high pressure pulls the jet stream well to the north, leaving hot and dry conditions to its south.

And what is making the heat wave look extra scary? The humidity.

There is so much moist air over the Eastern U.S. Dew points this high are only going to make these 90s worse. Feels like temperatures could flirt with triple digits for several days.
