BJ's roof collapses in New Jersey as floods swamp Northeast

Relentless downpours turned dangerous in New Jersey when the roof of a BJ's Wholesale Club suddenly collapsed under the weight of pooled rainwater.

Security cameras captured the dramatic moment the roof gave way Monday morning at the store along Route 35 in the Oakhurst section of Ocean Township.

Police said all 27 employees who were working at the time were accounted for, and all customers safely evacuated. No injuries were reported, though two people were initially “entrapped” by debris before freeing themselves.

"This incident is another reminder of how quickly severe weather can create dangerous and unpredictable conditions," said Monmouth County Sheriff Shaun Golden.

Radar for the area showed between 5-7 inches of rainfall in a span of around three hours. Officials say the weight of the water caused approximately 20% of the rear of the building to cave in.

The Monmouth County Sheriff's Office said multiple first responders and aid crews rushed to the scene and urged people to stay away from the area so emergency crews could work safely.

The dangerous weather extended well beyond the store.

Floodwaters also swamped parts of Route 35, making travel hazardous, and officials warned drivers to avoid the area. The flooding was part of a larger flash flood event affecting parts of the region, with even heavier rainfall reported near New York City's Coney Island neighborhood east toward John F. Kennedy International Airport.

With more rain in the forecast, officials warned that flooding could continue to worsen.
