Storms and heat ahead — pack light layers and an umbrella. Here are your key weather maps.

Summer thunderstorms and a shift in the weather pattern should make you change what you pack going through the next week.

Scattered storms are likely from the Northern Plains to the Southeast over the next few days. These will be the pop-up and go variety of storms for most of us. A quick-moving line of storms is possible in the Dakotas followed by a quick splash of cooler air.

By Wednesday, unsettled weather should begin to impact some of the mid-Atlantic and move to the Northeast by Thursday.

As we head toward next weekend, heat is expected to build across the West. Temperatures could be close to the century mark from the Northern Rockies to the Badlands.

Two other factors to keep in mind as you travel: the pollen and smoke.

  • The grasses are in full bloom in many areas, as well. Pollen sufferers will want to account for that in any outdoor plans. Mold allergy sufferers will want to keep this concern in mind across the South.
  • If your trip takes you into Utah, Colorado or the northern Plains, keep smoke in mind. There are several wildfires burning that are lowering air quality. Grab the mask if you're susceptible to breathing problems.
