Wildfire drives George Clooney’s family from French home

A wildfire forced George Clooney, the Oscar-winning actor, and his family to evacuate their home in southeastern France, but Clooney and his wife, Amal, made a pledge to rebuild as they left.

The fire broke out on Wednesday near the town of Brignoles, about 55 miles east of Marseille, burning about 300 acres.

Clooney sent a letter to Mayor Didier Bremond, saying, “At this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment, and as we evacuate Brignoles we want to emphasise two things. First, we hope you and the people of our city are safe and second, that Amal and I are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and we'll be part of making it whole. We love Brignoles and our friends who live there.”

About 700 residents were evacuated and were allowed to return to their homes on Thursday after the fire was brought under control. However, officials warned residents to stay vigilant because high temperatures and winds could worsen fire conditions.

Clooney, his wife Amal, who is a human rights lawyer, and their nine-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, have lived on a vineyard estate in Brignoles since 2021.

Last December the French government announced that the entire family had been awarded French citizenship.
