Sesame Street’s new storm special helps kids cope

Sesame Street is arguably the most beloved neighborhood in the world for kids and kids at heart, now they're stepping into the storm.

The Sesame Workshop has just launched a new special aimed at helping children and their families prepare for, cope through and recover from extreme weather.

The new special includes Elmo, Abby, Big Bird and all the familiar faces that bring joy and comfort to kids. Children who watch will get to see their fuzzy friends build safety kits and "go bags" before a storm arrives; play games that help calm their bodies and minds during the scariest parts of a storm; and then see how the neighborhood works together to rebuild after storm damage.

Why now?

U.S. billion-dollar weather disasters have hit record numbers in recent years, and more American children than ever are experiencing disasters firsthand.

Sesame Workshop says in a national survey, two in three parents reported experiencing one or more extreme weather events in the past two years.

“Extreme weather is now a reality for many families, and young children need support they can understand and trust,” said Joseph Giraldi, Chief Operating Officer, Sesame Workshop.

The special is just part of the launch of broader initiative, funded by long-time Sesame Workshop partner the PSEG Foundation. It also includes:

  • Activities designed for parents and kids to work through together
  • Educational resources on Sesame Workshop's website
  • Follow-on content to help families navigate whatever weather comes their way

"Storm on Sesame Street" features guest appearances from singer Post Malone and actress Michelle Buteau. It's streaming now on Netflix and PBS KIDS. The special will come to YouTube in September for free viewing.
