What Is An IP and IPX Rating?

Here’s a quick refresher if you’re looking for a waterproof or water-resistant gadget for your outdoor adventures.

The IP rating (which represents the ingress protection rating, essentially grading electronics on their resistance to dust or liquids) will be represented with two numbers.

First number - scale from 0 (no protection at all), to a high of 6 (no penetration) of solids like dust.
Second number - scale of 0 (no protection), to a high of 9 (high-pressure hot water from different angles) of liquids.

So if you see a device, like the Apple AirPods Pro 2, with a rating of IP54, it means it’s dust-tight (highest rating possible), and protected against splashing water.

If you see a rating such as IPX#, it just means it may not be rated for dust resistance, but has been tested specifically for liquid resistance.

I did a full review on the Apple Watch Series 10 back when it had its first sale down to $299 (and that was $100 off on a brand new series). I use it now as my smartwatch of choice, replacing my Fitbit which I consistently used for years.

I use it largely for my fitness tracking, everything from running and ellipticals, to horseback riding and weight training. Anyone who has used an Apple Watch knows the pain of trying to close those three rings, am I right?
