These are some of the most popular ingredient options and offer a lot of benefits with their natural fatty acid profiles. In hair products, these ingredients are used to lock in moisture, increase softness and even act as a heat protectant.

• Argan Oil: Argan oil is medium-weight and rich with vitamin E and fatty acids. Ideal for thick, curly, normal to dry, color-treated or frizzy hair types.
• Coconut Oil: According to one study, coconut oil is particularly popular for its claimed antibacterial properties, protein loss prevention, lubrication and detangling abilities. Best suited for thick, coarse, dry and high-porosity hair that needs intensive repair. Can be too heavy for fine hair.

It’s best for those with oily or dry scalps, brittle or dry hair, and those with sensitive skin as it's non-comedogenic (pore clogging). You shouldn’t use it directly on your roots as it can cause inflammation or the growth of bacteria.
• Olive Oil: Heavy, antioxidant-rich oil best for very dry, curly, thick or chemically damaged hair requiring intensive moisture therapy. It may be too heavy for fine or thin hair.
• Sweet Almond Oil: Derived from nuts, it features a light texture with emollient properties that will help smooth out the hair shaft, boost shine and reduce breakage. It’s ideal for fine to medium hair, children's hair and scalp massage applications.

Essential Oil Blends

• Baobab Oil: Baobab oil is cold-pressed from seeds, rich in fatty acids and high in vitamins B and C. Ideal for very dry, damaged or mature hair requiring intensive repair. May not be ideal for those with sensitive or oily skin.

Seasonal Considerations

All seasons are not created equal when it comes to skincare products, and it holds true for your hair products as well. Here are a few seasonal considerations and application tips for hair oil usage.

Application Techniques

This drugstore favorite, OGX Nourishing Coconut Oil Hair Mist, topped the charts delivering coconut oil benefits in a lightweight, easy-to-apply applicator. The spray-mist system makes it nearly impossible to over-apply (unless it’s used on purpose as an overnight treatment), addressing the most common complaint with traditional coconut oil treatments. While it contains actual coconut oil, the silicone-heavy formula means you're getting shine and smoothness rather than deep conditioning benefits.

Reviewers consistently praise its effectiveness on fine and thin hair, noting that it provides the moisture and shine of heavier oils without the weight. “Excellent light moistening oil,” says one happy reviewer. “[It’s] the only oil that I can use on my fine blonde hair that doesn’t weigh it down and doesn’t make it feel greasy.”

However, this isn't the product for those seeking intensive repair or deep conditioning. However, this simplicity comes with trade-offs. As a single-ingredient product, it lacks the targeted benefits of formulated blends, so no added vitamins or proteins.

This Botanic Hearth rosemary oil blend was a recommendation from my colleague, Carmen Molina, as both she and her daughter use a variety of hair oils.

Testing: I used this for almost six months, especially during winter months when my hair desperately needed a boost. It helped smooth my dry ends – not a cure-all, but definitely an improvement especially since I use heat multiple times a week to style my hair. It was lightweight with cautious use, so I never felt any greasiness in my hair even though I have fine hair texture. I did have to be careful layering too much in between washes though.

This suggests the immediate benefits come more from conventional smoothing agents than the marketed botanicals. Because of the silicone-heavy formula, it can leave a residue behind or cause scalp irritation over time.
