Good sleep practices start with your bedding, and there’s a reason why luxury bedding options have exploded in recent years.

1. Gentle On Your Hair

The smooth texture of the fabric causes less friction against your hair cuticles – coarser fabrics (like cotton or linen) can snag your hair as you sleep. Reduced friction may help with less tangling, frizziness and breakage, especially for those with curly, natural or hair prone to tangling. And for those with bleached, dyed or chemically treated hair, a smooth surface could be a much-needed essential to help restore some of your strands' silkiness.

2. Moisture Retention

In spring and summer, I tend to get hot and a little sweaty depending on my bedding quality. Silk pillowcases are moisture-repellent and breathable, and the fabric design will help you ‘keep your cool’ even during blazing summer nights.

What To Avoid

When selecting the right silk pillowcase for your needs, here are a few tips to keep in mind as you’re shopping.

1. Make sure it’s made of pure 100% mulberry silk, which is a strong and smooth type of silk (think the Egyptian cotton of silk fabrics, according to Casper).
2. Avoid silk options that include other synthetic blends.
3. Avoid options that do not meet or mention any certification regarding chemical safety.
4. Avoid options that do not state the momme count. Look for a high momme count (ideally 22+ mm). Momme measures the silk density and weight, and the higher the number, the better the quality. The average silk pillowcase ranges between 19 to 22 momme.
5. If you see a grading scale (A, B, and C) in the description of the silk pillowcase, it references a different type of quality. A is the best quality, with C being lowest. If you see a product listed as 6A, it typically represents the highest quality of that specific silk that you can buy.
