All About 'Heart Attack' Snow

An active weather pattern could result in delays for those traveling for Christmas into the weekend.

Fewer Americans than usual are expected to travel this holiday season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but as many as 84.5 million may still travel from Dec. 23 through Jan. 3, according to AAA.

Below, we take a look at what to expect each day across the Lower 48.

Sunday's Forecast

The system in the West will slide into the central U.S. and another system will begin to approach the California coast later Sunday.

-East: The East will see dry conditions during the day but clouds will increase and wet weather will begin to develop Sunday night in parts of the Southeast and interior Northeast. Highs will be closer to average than on Saturday.

-Central: Snow is likely in the Great Lakes while some rain will fall in the southern Great Lakes. Temperatures will be near to above average.

-West: Rain and mountain snow will increase in California and Nevada, especially by Sunday night. Rain and snow showers will also continue in parts of the Northwest and Rockies. Highs will generally be near average.

The green shadings depict where rain is expected. Areas that are shaded blue are expected to see snow. Purple-shaded locations may see either rain or snow. Areas in pink are expected to see sleet or freezing rain (ice).
