Another round of heat is building over much of Europe, not long after severe thunderstorms brought a violent end to intense heat earlier this week.

The heat wave earlier this week sent Salzburg, Austria, to a new all-time record high of 101.5ºF (38.6ºC). Other locations in Austria came within less than one degree of the all-time record high for the country. The tiny neighboring principality of Liechtenstein also came within a fraction of a degree of its historical record. Triple-digit temperatures also gripped parts of Italy, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, and the former Yugoslav republics.

After cold front swept through much of Europe, triggering hailstorms and tornadoes Saturday through Monday as it passed, the heat began returning via Spain on Wednesday. That country's capital, Madrid, topped out at 99ºF Wednesday, while the southern city of Cordoba sizzled at 103ºF.

On Thursday, high temperatures topped out in the low 90s in London, middle 90s in Paris and the low 100s in Madrid.

Heat Builds North, East

As the maps on the right show, the heat will expand north and east into more of Europe through the start of the weekend.

Highs in the 90s will expand into much of France, Germany, and the Low Countries. Even the Alpine countries of Switzerland and Austria will again swelter in uncomfortable levels of heat.

As you might expect, areas farther south will be even hotter, with temperatures in the triple digits expected for interior parts of Spain, Italy, and the Balkans.

By the weekend, France and the Benelux region should see some relief, but the sizzling heat will continue for central and southeastern Europe. Highs in the 80s could even push as far north as Stockholm, Sweden.
