Memorial Day Forecast: Nicer Northeast, Wetter West Coast

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial kick off to the summer season ahead. Unfortunately for parts of the Northeast, it hasn't felt anything like summer. In fact, a few locales have been feeling more like winter!

Late-season snow struck the Adirondacks and parts of northern New England over the weekend. In fact, the summit of Whiteface Mountain, N.Y., reported 34 inches of new snow as of late Sunday afternoon! Mount Mansfield, Vt., reported 13.2 inches.

Friday afternoon, sleet and graupel was observed in Binghamton, N.Y., the latest date of either sleet or snow on record, there, dating to 1951.  A brief period of flurries late Friday night in Syracuse, N.Y. was the city's latest occurrence of snow on record, topping the previous "latest snow" record from May 17, 1973.

Memorial Day weather will be quite pleasant for most of the Northeast, with warmer temperatures. Highs in the 60s and 70s will be common. The one exception will be northern Maine where clouds and even some morning showers will linger, holding temperatures to the 50s.

Memorial Day - Southeast, Central and West

Southeast - Much of the region should continue to be dry. Highs in the 80s will be common after morning lows in the 60s and lower 70s.

Central U.S. - More showers and thunderstorms are expected from the Plains into the Middle and Upper Mississippi Valleys. Some could turn severe in the Plains; more flash flooding is possible too, especially in Iowa.

High temperatures will likely hold in the 60s to near 70 in the Great Lakes and Upper Mississippi Valley, including Minneapolis and Chicago. Plenty of 80s and a few 90s are forecast in the central and southern Plains.

Western U.S. - Showers and thunderstorms are possible from much of the Northwest southward into northern California, including the Bay Area, as well as western Nevada. Dry weather will prevail in the Southwest. High temperatures will be some 5 to 15 degrees below normal in these areas of unsettled weather, but 10-15 degrees above average along the Front Range of the Rockies, including Denver.
