An upper-level low pressure system is slowly moving across the region this weekend and can be thanked for the early season snow. The frozen precipitation can be seen as a blessing, since snowmelt provides up to 75 percent of the West's freshwater supply.

Other parts of the country have already seen snow, including record-early snowfall in Rapid City, South Dakota earlier in September.

The accumulating snow may impact travel and result in some road closures in the higher passes including Highways 4, 88, 89, 108, 120 and 203.

The snow will come to an end on Sunday as the low pressure system moves farther east.
