Thursday morning forecast: Lows will range from the single digits above and below zero in northern New England to the low and middle 20s in the Mid-Atlantic. More than 20 locations will be within three degrees of a daily record low. Below are the current record lows to beat Thursday morning for a few cities in the Northeast:

  • Newark: 23 degrees (2001)
  • New York City: 20 degrees (1894)
  • Concord, N.H.: 9 degrees (1975)
  • Providence, R.I.: 16 degrees (1975)
  • Boston: 16 degrees (1873)

Thursday afternoon and Friday forecast: Somewhat warmer weather starts to arrive in the East Thursday afternoon, and by Friday temperatures should be above average by a few degrees in the Northeast.

Friday's highs will reach into the 50s in Boston and New York City. Farther south, temperatures may top out in the 60s in Philadelphia and Washington.

Unfortunately, this return to milder temperatures will likely be accompanied by rain and cloud cover, particularly during the second half of the day.
