Owning a home is part of the American Dream, but for first-time home buyers entering the market, it can be a daunting one to bring to reality. In some of the priciest neighborhoods (like Manhattan, for instance), average home prices can reach nearly $2 million. Luckily, the numbers are more reasonable in other parts of the country.

In February 2015, the national median home price in the U.S. was $202,600 per the National Realtor's Association. Rounding down, that's $200,000 -- a tenth the price of costliest neighborhoods. And while $200,000 might get you a closet in New York City, in more affordable towns across America, three- and four-bedroom homes on sprawling plots of land are the norm.
