The Radiator Sounds Like It's From The Upside Down

This time of year, many of us depend on our heating systems for, well, our lives.

That doesn’t mean they always work correctly. If your radiator makes annoying knocking sounds, there are simple ways to fix it. These noises usually happen because of trapped air, or when steam meets cool pipes in the system.

First, check when the knocking occurs. Is it constant or only when the heat first comes on? This helps identify the problem.

For steam radiators, make sure your radiator is properly positioned. It should be slightly tilted toward the return pipe. That’s the pipe where water flows back.

This allows condensed water to flow back properly instead of getting trapped and causing knocks when it meets incoming steam.

If tilting doesn't work, try bleeding the radiator. Turn off your heating system and let it cool completely. I realize that isn’t ideal in cold weather, but sometimes it can be necessary.

Find the bleed valve, which is usually a small valve on the side of the radiator. Use a radiator key or a flat screwdriver to open it slightly. You'll hear a hissing sound as air escapes; close it when water starts to come out.

For persistent problems, you just might need to call a professional. They’ll know what to do.
