The Bolton Eco House in northwest England may be a blueprint for homes of the future.

The house was designed by London-based Make Architects, a group that places a heavy emphasis on minimizing environmental impacts and optimizing energy.

The Bolton Eco Home was designed as a one-story, four-bedroom home embedded into a hillside. Grass and other plants cover the roof to complete the illusion that the home blends into its surroundings. The earth-sheltered design and construction would "minimize the impact on the surrounding moorland" Make Architects explains.

The home would also generate its own power through a ground heat pump, a wind turbine and solar panels. The house would actually produce more energy than it would consume.
