Chicago's Blizzard of 1967: 23 Inches in 2 Days

On Jan. 26-27, 1967, Chicago was buried under 23 inches of snow — the heaviest snowstorm in the city's history. Wind gusts of 50 mph created drifts up to 6 feet high, stranding 20,000 cars and 1,100 buses in the streets. Helicopters were used to deliver supplies to hospitals and stranded motorists as the Windy City ground to a complete halt. The blizzard was blamed for 60 deaths across the metro area.
