This golden retriever ended up in the Bristol Channel and was at risk of getting swept out to sea.

Seren took off from her owner’s car after getting spooked by a noise. She darted toward the water at Newton Beach, BBC reported, and that’s Seren’s owner, Andrea, called the coastguard and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) got involved.

The incident happened in Porthcawl, Wales, on Saturday, Feb.1. Luckily, the weather was pretty mild, and that might have been the pup’s saving grace. While morning lows were in the 30s, afternoon highs rose to the mid-40s to around 50 degrees, and wind gusts didn’t climb beyond 15 mph, according to weather.com Senior Meteorologist Jon Erdman.

The RNLI found Seren about 328 yards offshore, exhausted from swimming, with the current pushing her further out to sea. The lifeboat crew brought the three-year-old dog back to land, where she was reunited with her owner, who had adopted her only five weeks prior, according to a news release posted on the RNLI website.

“I’ve rescued many dogs in my time, but Seren is definitely the most traumatized,” Andrea told the RNLI.

Seren was just getting used to regular beach walks with her new family when she took off. Andrea said she believed that the sound of the car trunk locking may have been what scared Seren.

“She leapt out immediately, running across the dunes and down the beach,” Andrea said.

Seren’s rescue was the RNLI’s first rescue of the year. RNLI Helm Chris Missen said that the team spotted Seren immediately after boating around Newton Point and that she was a little shaken but uninjured.

“I honestly can’t thank the volunteer RNLI crew enough for saving Seren,” said Andrea. “They turned a nightmare into a dream. It was like something out of a movie seeing the crew member in their kit carrying Seren from the lifeboat through the shallows.”
