In a reminder that firefighters look out for all sorts of creatures in addition to humans, a firefighter in Hanover County, Virginia, who was working his last shift before retirement assisted in the rescue of a cat who had fallen down a well. Firefighter and medic Jerry Stout was one of several first responders who turned out to assist the distressed feline, who had fallen down a well and was trapped in its pump house, ten feet below ground.

According to a spokesperson for the department, firefighter and medic Hailey Cook was able to access the cat and bring it up to safety. Afterwards, firefighters turned the cat over to animal control for evaluation.
