New Jersey Firefighters Pull Off Purr-fect Rescue

In a dramatic demonstration that no life is too small to save, Westfield, New Jersey, firefighters transformed a potentially tragic situation into a heartwarming rescue story last Thursday.

In Westfield, New Jersey, the crew of the fire department’s Ladder 1 made an adorably furry new friend: a little kitten that had been reported stuck in a storm drain.

It happened last Thursday, according to a post the department made on social media. “The crew of Ladder 1 worked for about an hour to safely, and without injury, rescue the kitten from the storm drain,” the department wrote.

According to another social post, this time by the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad, the rescue took place outside of Squad President Callie Campbell's house, and Campbell was able to assist in the fire crew’s effort.

“The Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad is so grateful to our incredible Fire Department for their excellent work and dedication. Our community is lucky to have such amazing first responders,” the post read.

After the successful rescue, the kitten was taken to a local animal control provider for a health checkup and to be put up for possible adoption, according to the fire department. Photos taken at the scene show both cat and fire crew looking happy and content after the successful rescue.
