While much of the Northern Hemisphere settles into winter's chill, South America is basking in summer sunshine. And nowhere was that warmth more evident on Monday than in a Buenos Aires park where 2,397 golden retrievers created a spectacularly golden spectacle, shattering the previous unofficial world record.

The canine congregation at Bosques de Palermo park broke the previous record of 1,685 golden retrievers, which was set in Vancouver last year. Families from across Argentina transformed the park into a sea of wagging tails and happy barks, with dogs sporting costumes ranging from Argentine soccer jerseys to Star Wars bandanas.

"This is a historic event," event organizer Fausto Duperre told the Associated Press after the successful count. "I'm truly grateful and happy, proud, excited and overjoyed all at once."

Despite concerns about potential chaos with thousands of dogs in one location, participants reported a surprisingly smooth experience.

"I was afraid I would lose her, I was afraid she would fight, I was afraid another dog would attack her," Elena Deleo, 64, told the Associated Press while stroking her golden retriever Angie. "But no, they're all affectionate, all gentle. ... It's just a very lovely experience."
