At least 120 people have died and another 200 were injured during a heavy rain and dust storm that struck northern and western India overnight Wednesday. Winds as strong as 80 mph destroyed homes and knocked down trees in Agra, where the storm was the most severe.

The storm hit the region more than six weeks before monsoon season, bringing deadly lightning and kicking up dust with heavy winds. Officials say that more than 40 people were killed in Agra, and more than 70 were killed in Uttar Pradesh state, mostly due to falling trees and crumbling walls, according to BBC.com. In the western state of Rajasthan, the death toll is at 35 with another 150 injured.

A resident in Rajasthan's village of Khakhawali told the New York Times that "dust gathered with such speed" that it was blinding, making it impossible to see even "millimeters away or keep my eyes open."

Jaipur District Divisional Commissioner T Ravi Kant said that the storm has caused widespread electricity loss and water shortages.
