Photographer Liz Roll travels up and down the East Coast and Mid-Atlantic photographing abandoned homes, factories, stores, restaurants and more. Above, an abandoned house in central Virginia has peeling paint as it succumbs to the elements. (Liz Roll)

Weathered roofs, peeling paint and possessions left behind are just examples of the eeriness an abandoned house conveys. Behind each door, there's the feeling that the must be more to the story.

Photographer Liz Roll seeks to capture that feeling in her images of abandoned houses throughout the U.S. Some of her favorite photos in the collection show items left behind, making it seem as if the occupants have just recently left the scene.

Several of the photos feature suitcases that seem to be packed and waiting for an owner. Others feature artwork askew on a wall, cabinets left wide open and dinner tables set for a meal.

Roll also photographed abandoned Futuro homes in Willingboro and Greenwich, New Jersey, a relic of futuristic design from the late 1960s and early 1970s. The short-lived architectural structures were disk-like and looked like alien space crafts. Standing out unnaturally against rural backdrops, the design was ultimately a failure, with fewer than 100 built. Even fewer stand now.
