Hurricane Sally is being blamed for at least two deaths. The storm, which made landfall early Wednesday in Gulf Shores, Alabama, as a Category 2 storm, has since been downgraded to a tropical storm and has moved inland.

One person was killed when a tree fell on a home in Atlanta, and Ken Grimes, city administrator in Orange Beach, Alabama, confirmed the death of an unidentified man in the town on Wednesday.

Residents who live near rivers in Santa Rosa County, Florida, are being urged to evacuate Thursday morning, as multiple water rescues had already taken place and floodwaters continued to rise.

Storm surge and flooding inundated homes and businesses along the upper Gulf Coast, and parts of Pensacola were underwater Wednesday morning. The Pensacola Bay Bridge, which connects Gulf Breeze to Pensacola, was damaged in the storm. Photos showed a piece missing from the bridge and a crane laying across it.

More than 500,000 customers are without power across Florida, Alabama and Georgia as of Thursday morning, according to poweroutage.us.

A storm surge of 5.5 feet and a rainfall total of more than two feet was recorded near Pensacola, Florida, and 200 National Guard members were sent to the area to help starting Thursday, according to the Associated Press.

A curfew has been issued in Escambia County for the next three nights, the New York Times reported.

In Baldwin County, Alabama, officials warned of an "extremely dangerous situation," including major flooding and severe widespread damage. Damage was also reported in Mobile and Gulf Shores.

Dozens of people were rescued from flooded homes in Orange Beach, Alabama, Wednesday.

On Dauphin Island, Mayor Jeff Collier said numerous structures were damaged and trees were down. Photos show boats crushed up against each other and against docks.

The storm was downgraded to a tropical storm on Wednesday afternoon, and is currently bringing winds and flooding rain to parts of the Southeast. Heavy rainfall has flooded roads in areas of southeastern Alabama and parts of southern and central Georgia Wednesday into early Thursday.
