The Deep South saw up to six inches of snow in some locations and schools in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama cancelled classes or delayed opening for a rare snow day.

Winter Storm Lana left more than 150,000 homes and businesses without electricity Monday morning, according to poweroutage.us.

The National Weather Service in Houston clocked six inches in parts of southern Texas Sunday night. Photos show children and adults alike delighting in the winter weather, riding sleds and making snow angels and snowmen.

But troopers were busy responding to several crashes and disabled vehicles in Louisiana, and Interstates 49 and 220 near Shreveport, Louisiana, remained closed Monday morning due to dangerous weather conditions. Several other state highways also had to close due to the storm.

The storm left government offices closed in 29 west and northern parishes in Louisiana on Monday, and delayed opening for government offices until 10 a.m. in Mississippi's Hinds County, according to The Advocate.
