At least five were left dead in Alabama after a severe weather outbreak in the South that spawned several tornadoes.

The five deaths occurred in Calhoun County, east of Birmingham, Alabama. Four of the victims lived in Ohatchee, where significant damage has been reported. The fifth person was killed in a mobile home in Wellington.

At least a half dozen tornadoes had been confirmed in Alabama, while one was confirmed in Mississippi and another in Tennessee as of late Thursday night.

The National Weather Service declared a tornado emergency for Newnan, Georgia, about 35 miles southwest of Atlanta, shortly after midnight on Friday.

Photos from Friday morning show heavy damage in the area, and police tweeted that several streets were closed due to downed trees and power lines. The local high school sustained significant damage, and a nearby elementary school was also hit.

A tornado brought considerable damage to the Eagle Point subdivision south of Birmingham, Alabama, Thursday afternoon. Photos show several homes in the community completely destroyed by the storm.

NOAA's Storm Prediction Center issued a rare "high risk" severe weather warning ahead of the outbreak through Thursday night in parts of Mississippi and Alabama and into parts of south-central Tennessee.

A series of likely tornadoes spawned for about 3 hours across several counties in Alabama on Thursday. Damage to several homes and trailers was reported near West Blocton in Bibb County.
