Intense rainfall was likely to blame for a massive landslide in the resort town of Atami, Japan, on Saturday, which killed at least four people and left dozens more missing.

The wave of black mud, water and debris swallowed up entire buildings, leaving at least 130 homes and other structures damaged. Of the 25 people who were rescued from the mud, three sustained injuries; As of Monday, some 80 people remained unaccounted for.

The area was hammered by heavy rainfall in recent days, and it received more than a month's worth of rain in the 24 hours leading up to the disaster. The slide occurred about 65 miles southwest of Tokyo.

Some 35,000 people were ordered to evacuate their homes following the landslide, and other nearby cities also asked some residents to evacuate. Atami has a registered population of 36,800, according to the Associated Press.
