More than 1,900 people died in a 7.2-magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti on Saturday morning, and Tropical Depression Grace hampered rescue efforts on Monday and Tuesday.

The quake struck about 78 miles west of Port-au-Prince. At least 7,000 homes were destroyed, 5,000 more were damaged and those without shelter were forced to sleep on soccer fields and in the street as aftershocks continued throughout the overnight hours.

At least 9,900 injuries were reported, and more than 30,000 families were left homeless by the large tremor, officials told the Associated Press.
