T​he remnants of Typhoon Merbok struck western Alaska over the weekend as the worst storm to hit the area in half a century.

T​he remnants of Typhoon Merbok struck western Alaska over the weekend as the worst storm to hit the area in half a century. Photos show inundated roads and buildings and massive waves pounding the coast.

A​ccording to Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy, the storm's waves caused flooding and damage along 1,000 miles of the state's coastline. T​he storm weakened Sunday but was still threatening smaller communities on Alaska's northwestern coast.

The Associated Press reported that several homes were knocked from their foundations into the floodwaters as winds gusted near 70 miles per hour. A home in the community of Nome floated down the Snake River until it became wedged under a bridge.

S​o far, no deaths or injuries have been reported due to the storm.

D​unleavy declared a state of emergency on Saturday.

“We're gonna move as quickly as possible and we'll be focusing on the communities that have really received damage and really need the help the most,” Dunleavy said in a Sunday press conference. “Wherever there is help that is needed. We'll be getting that help there as soon as possible.” He identified Hooper Bay, Scammon Bay, Golovin, Newtok and Nome as five communities that have been majorly impacted by the storm.
