A​n earthquake rocked Northern California Tuesday, damaging buildings and a roadway and knocking out power to thousands of people.

T​he magnitude-6.4 earthquake struck southwest of Eureka, California, at 2:34 a.m. PST Tuesday. The epicenter was about 7.5 miles west-southwest of Ferndale, California.

An 83-year-old and a 72-year-old died after not being able to receive timely care after suffering medical emergencies during or after the quake, according to The Associated Press. Twelve others were injured.

I​mages show damaged buildings in Rio Dell, California, where the most serious damage occurred. According to a partial assessment, at least 15 homes in the town were damaged so badly as to be deemed uninhabitable, while 18 others were moderately damaged.

R​io Dell's water service was shut down to address damage on Tuesday, and could be shut down for as long as two days, The AP reported.

M​ore than 14,000 customers remained without power on Wednesday in Humboldt County, down from more than 70,000 on Tuesday, according to poweroutage.us.
