W​inter Storm Elliott is being blamed for at least 69 deaths, with 39 of those being in and around Buffalo, New York, where the storm dumped feet of snow, trapping people in vehicles and homes.

O​ne hundred military police and other law enforcement were called into Buffalo on Tuesday to help enforce a driving ban in the city. The snow continued on Tuesday and was expected to stop late in the day.

P​hotos show people digging out cars in Buffalo where at least 49 inches of snow fell. There are also photos of flooding brought to coastal Maine and Hamburg, New York, on the banks of Lake Erie.

Thousands of flights were cancelled ahead of the holiday weekend as the storm took hold, and at one point more than 1 million homes and businesses were without power across the country due to Elliott.
