A tropical disturbance in the western Gulf of Mexico will bring heavy rain and possible flash flooding to parts of Texas through this weekend.

The National Hurricane Center has dubbed this disturbance Invest 95L. This is a naming convention used to identify areas in the tropics that are being monitored for possible development into a tropical depression.

The NHC has given Invest 95L a low chance of developing into a tropical depression before it slides inland on Friday.

Additional heavy rain in parts of Texas is the main threat from this system through Saturday, particularly near the coast and in south Texas.

This could trigger flash flooding and worsening river flooding. Rainfall rates up to 2 inches per hour were possible into Friday afternoon along much of the Texas coast.

On Friday morning, roads were flooded in Galveston.

Flash flood watches have been issued by the National Weather Service across southern Texas and the southeast Texas coast eastward to near Galveston.

The threat of flooding is high enough that some school districts on the central Texas coast have canceled school on Friday. Others are opening with delayed starts. 

Portions of south Texas may see up to 3 inches of rain through this weekend.

Parts of Texas have been dealing with flooding over the past one to two weeks.

In Donna, Texas, water rescues were reported, and water had entered some homes in that city Tuesday evening. Numerous vehicles were also stranded on flooded roadways, according to the National Weather Service.

Early Monday morning, people had to be rescued from floodwaters in Laredo. Streets were flooded in McAllen and Mission in the Lower Rio Grande Valley Sunday night.
