Rating Hurricanes: The Saffir-Simpson Scale

Governors in three states, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia, have ordered residents and visitors to evacuate coastal areas in advance of Hurricane Florence. Here is a list of evacuation for each state for each state as of 6 a.m. Wednesday.

South Carolina Evacuations

Mandatory evacuations from Edisto Beach in Jasper County to the North Carolina-South Carolina state line in Horry County.

Counties affected: Edisto Beach in Jasper County, Dorchester, Berkeley, Charleston, Georgetown, and Horry.

North Carolina Evacuations

Mandatory evacuation for all North Carolina barrier islands.

Columbus County – voluntary evacuation

Brunswick County — mandatory evacuation of unincorporated areas; mandatory evacuation for Holden Beach visitors, voluntary evacuation for residents; voluntary evacuation for Leland and Navassa; mandatory evacuation for Oak Island visitors

New Hanover County — voluntary evacuation in effect for entire county; mandatory evacuation for UNCW, Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, Wrightsville Beach

Pender County — voluntary evacuation of low-lying, substandard housing or mobile homes

Duplin County – voluntary evacuation for the entire county

Onslow and Pender counties — voluntary evacuation of Surf City

Onslow County — mandatory evacuation of unincorporated areas and Topsail Beach

Carteret County— mandatory evacuation for Atlantic Beach, Emerald Isle, Indian Beach, and Pine Knoll Shores

Jones County – mandatory evacuation for all towns and unincorporated areas

Lenoir County – voluntary evacuation

Craven County — mandatory evacuation for the entire county

Pamlico County — mandatory evacuation for entire county

Beaufort County — voluntary evacuation for the entire county; mandatory evacuation of low-lying, substandard housing or mobile homes

Hyde County — mandatory evacuation for entire county
