Tropical Cyclone Kenneth Makes Landfall (PHOTOS)

Tropical Cyclone Kenneth made landfall north of Pemba, Mozambique, around 4:15 p.m. local time on Thursday. The storm comes a little more than a month after Tropical Idai's deadly and destructive landfall in the country.

Kenneth intensified from a Category 1 to a Category 4-equivalent tropical cyclone on Wednesday, packing 140 mph winds at landfall. The storm is the first-known hurricane-strength landfall in Cabo Delgado Province in known history.

Mozambique's National Disasters Management Institute estimated that 682,500 people are at risk in Cabo Delgado and Niassa provinces. CNN reported that thousands of people were evacuated to shelters on Thursday.

The storm could bring 10 to 16 feet of storm surge, according to the Météo-France Tropical Cyclone Center in La Reunion.

Kenneth triggered flash flooding and mudslides when its eyewall slammed the Comoros Islands early Wednesday. At least three people were killed in the archipelago due to the storm, the New York Times reported.
