More than a dozen people have died in India and Bangladesh as a result of Tropical Cyclone Fani, which made landfall Friday on India's northeastern coast as a Category 4-equivalent storm.

It was the strongest landfall in India's Odisha state since 1999. The storm hit with life-threatening storm surge, damaging winds and flooding rains.

The state of Odisha has sent thousands of disaster management personnel to aid residents living in mud-and-thatched homes in low-lying regions seek shelter, Reuters reported.
