Weekend thunderstorms caused damaged and killed two people in the Northeast.

Severe thunderstorms hit southern Connecticut and Long Island Sunday afternoon, killing two people and knocking out power to thousands.

One death occurred in Fairfield, Connecticut, when a tree fell on a vehicle about 2:20 p.m. EDT, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). Another person had to be extracted from the damaged vehicle.

The NWS warned of destructive winds up to 60 mph before the storms hit.

As the storms plunged southward toward Long Island, New York, they damaged trees and power lines in Suffolk County.

Strong winds churned up waters along the coast of Fire Island, New York, causing one woman to drown. The woman was pulled from the water near Seaview Marina after Suffolk County police received a 911 call about 3:40 p.m. EDT, according to NBC New York.

A wind gust to 61 mph was clocked at a weather station on Fire Island at Ocean Bay Park.

About 21,000 customers remained without power on Long Island Monday morning, according to poweroutage.us

Damaging thunderstorms also hit the Northeast and mid-Atlantic, from Virginia to Vermont and New Hampshire, on Saturday.

Camping tents and a large party tent were blown over by strong thunderstorm winds near Shirleysburg, Pennsylvania, injuring 20 people. An NWS storm report said most of the injuries were minor.

The Philadelphia metro area was also hit hard by storms, with numerous downed trees and power lines reported Saturday afternoon.
