Two people were killed Tuesday evening on a rural road near Phelps, New York, when a tree fell and crushed their car during a round of severe weather.

The man and woman, believed to have both been in their 20s, were traveling County Road 6 in Oaks Corners when the tree fell, according to a WHAM-TV report. The storms are being blamed for bringing the tree down.

Officials told the Associated Press that the incident occurred at around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. The victims were traveling in a car with out-of-state license plates, and their names have not been released.

Powerful thunderstorms were passing through the region at the time, knocking out power to several thousand homes and businesses in neighboring Ontario and Monroe counties.

The National Weather Service has issued flash flood watches Wednesday for areas of upstate New York, stretching from the Buffalo area to the Mohawk Valley and the Adirondacks.
