Vermont firefighters were hit by lightning while trying to put out a house fire.

Seven firefighters in southeastern Vermont were hospitalized after officials say they were hit by lightning.

According to the Guilford Volunteer Fire Department's Facebook page, firefighters from that company and others were working on a structure fire Wednesday afternoon when lightning hit "in close proximity," the Associated Press reports.

They were all taken by ambulances and other rescue vehicles to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital for treatment. No serious injuries were reported.

The storms were part of a larger system that prompted severe thunderstorm watches for large cities across the Northeast, including New York City. The storms stretched into Upstate New York, bringing heavy downpours and high winds. High water forced officials to close roads in both Albany County and Sullivan County.
