One of the key problems meteorologists face during severe weather season is the gaps in radar coverage across areas prone to severe storms and tornadoes. Because of the way radar works, the electromagnetic pulses that are designed to bounce back off of atmospheric features like tornadoes are sent at an angle and not parallel to the ground. Meteorologist Sara Tonks breaks down what that means for the detection of tornadoes.
