Roads were clearing and snow was melting Friday morning throughout much of the Northeast after Winter Storm Avery killed 11 people, crippled travel for millions and knocked out power to hundreds of thousands late Thursday.

Commuters who attempted to drive home from work in areas like New York City and eastern Pennsylvania reported being stranded for up to seven hours as traffic on turnpikes and interstates reached a gridlock. Some who opted for public transit were stranded for up to 12 hours as Port Authority closed to additional commuters after 5:30 p.m. due to overcrowding. Trains and airports experienced delays as well due to Avery, with up to three hour delays at JFK, up to five hour delays at Newark Liberty International Airport and delays of over an hour at LaGuardia.

The storm's snow and ice left drivers spinning out on roadways in New Jersey, and along the Pennsylvania Turnpike, drivers said they were stuck for hours in standstill traffic as conditions worsened. A school in West Orange, New Jersey, kept students overnight to avoid the dangerous roadways and hours of traffic. In the Bronx, several special education students were reportedly stranded on a bus for 10 hours as the vehicle traveled from Manhattan.
