The internet made its voice heard and "Boaty McBoatface" has come up victorious in the poll to name an upcoming British polar research vessel.

The Natural Environment Research Council originally reached out to the public to come up with names for its estimated $3 million research ship last month, urging people to give suggestions via the hashtag #nameourboat. The campaign sparked the enthusiastic interest of the web, which proposed 7,000 different ideas.

In the end, "Boaty McBoatface" ended up winning with 124,109 votes, accounting for 78 percent of the vote total.

The NERC said it would look over the list of names and make its final naming decision soon.

"NERC will now review all of the suggested names and the final decision for the name will be announced in due course," the British research council said in a statement to the press.

UK research vessels have in the past have been named after Royal naval officers and explorers, and despite the internet's frenzied excitment over "Boaty McBoatface," Jo Johnson, the Minister for Universities and Science, told the Daily Telegraph that NERC was "unlikely to endorse the result."

"You won't be surprised to know that we want something that fits the mission and captures the spirit of scientific endeavor," Johnson told the newspaper. "I am grateful to everyone who has participated in the competition. The public has come up with some fantastic and very imaginative suggestions. We will come to a decision in due course."

According to The Guardian, here are the top five results of the poll:

  • Boaty McBoatface – 124,109 votes
  • Poppy-Mai – 34,371 votes
  • Henry Worsley – 15,231 votes
  • It’s bloody cold here – 10,679 votes
  • David Attenborough – 10,284 votes
