For the first time during their stay in the International Space Station, a team of NASA astronauts was finally able to spot Puerto Rico from the spacecraft.

Astronaut Joe Acaba, whose parents were both born on the island, captured an image of Puerto Rico from space.

He shared the image on Twitter, where he wrote, "Finally a chance to see the beautiful island of Puerto Rico from @Space_Station. Continued thoughts throughout the recovery process."

"My parents were born there, so a lot of relatives, cousins, godparents" are still in Puerto Rico, the astronaut told the Associated Press last month. "I hope everyone's doing well and that you take care of yourselves."

Hurricane Maria left at least 48 dead when it battered Puerto Rico on Sept. 20.

Hundreds of thousands remain without power and drinking water is in short supply as the island nation struggles to return to normalcy.
