HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK, Hawaii  — Hawaii Volcanoes National Park rangers rescued a 73-year-old man stranded overnight after surviving a 115-foot fall off a cliff.

Park officials say a hiker heard cries for help from dense vegetation along Halemaumau Trail Tuesday. She reported the cries to park rangers even though she thought it was a prank.

A helicopter lowered a search and rescue coordinator who pulled Harry Osachy to safety before sunset.

Osachy is Micronesian and speaks little English but told rescuers he had fallen on Monday. It's not known why or how he got over a rock wall barrier.

The Kurtistown resident was taken to Hilo Medical Center with pelvis and shoulder injuries. He had numerous scrapes and was dehydrated.

Search and Rescue Coordinator John Broward says a thicket of uluhe fern broke his fall.
