The Pan American Games, going on now in Toronto, showcase some of the best athletes in the Americas. However, stills taken during some of the most intense moments of the Games can offer a rare opportunity for laughter as the competitors strive to break records.

The concentration needed during these events often causes athletes to make some wild faces. As the swimmers in the photos above dance through a choreographed routine, their faces stretch and contort into grimaces and funny shapes as they gasp for air between bright smiles.

But don't let self-consciousness stop you from swimming a lap around the pool. The reward of refreshment is worth the embarrassment of a split second of silly faces.

Click through the above slideshow to see some of the wackiest faces made by these talented athletes, as well as some funny faces made by Olympic divers.
