Imagine a 230-plus foot floating disk, hovering less than a tenth of a mile above ground with thousands of cars zooming underneath at high speeds. And by the way, hundreds of bicyclists and pedestrians ride or walk on top of it every day.

This flying saucer-like cycle bridge is known as Hovenring and it's is the buzz of the cycling and architecture world. The city of Eindhoven in the Netherlands commissioned Hovenring, which was designed by ipv Delft, as a cyclist and pedestrian bridge over a busy highway. Ipv Delft decided to build not just a functional bridge but one that would become a well-known landmark.

"We studied the different possibilities and came up with the idea of a circle which is in balance. As a flying circle in equilibration with its self," Gerhard Nijenhuis, a project designer, said in a statement to The Weather Channel.

Hovenring’s design starts with a central pylon that soars ABOUT  230 feet high. It has 24 steel cables attached to it that radiate out from the center. Those pylons support the circular pathway that pedestrians and cyclists traverse.

"The project shows the Dutch vision of cycling as a important way of urban transportation," wrote Nijenhuis.

Hovenring was conceived in 2007 and is the first suspended bicycle roundabout in the world. It was opened for use in 2012.
