More than 52,000 spectators who lined the Nervión River underneath La Salve Bridge, witnessed the event, which was dominated by Russia’s Artem Silchenko. But it was Brit Gary Hunt who emerged victorious. His second-place finish at Bilbao earned him the overall World Series title.

Sunshine, heavy showers and a rumble or two of thunder above the dramatic setting of the Guggenheim Museum didn't deter the 13 divers who performed to the enthusiastic crowd. And it definitely didn't deter Hunt, who, heading into the head-to-head heats in Bilbao, knew that he would regain the crown he lost the previous year if he could stretch his lead at the top of the standings to more than 200 points.

"When I was on the end of the platform for my last dive, I just told myself 'imagine this is the last time you'll ever get to do this dive' and I was really happy with how it went," said Hunt. "I have won the title before, and not being on top of the podium for that event, so it's not quite perfect, but Artem's not won one this year so I'll let him have it!"

Russian Silchenko, who ended Hunt’s three-year reign as champion 12 months ago, wowed the crowds under La Salve Bridge.

"My back armstand was great – I got one 10 – and I’m so happy," said Silchenko. "My power is coming back and I’ve worked so hard in the gym and I’m getting back to my best. I want to finish the season strongly now. Mexico is the final stop and before then I will go back to Russia and be ready for the final. The crowd was crazy and very passionate. I’m happy and I think the spectators are as well."
