German photographer Lorenz Holder, who captured a snowboarder dwarfed by a giant satellite while doing a trick in mid-air, took home the top prize in the Red Bull Illume Image Quest 2013 photo contest – winning roughly $40,000 in camera gear provided by Leica, broncolor and Sun-Sniper.

“The quality of the images in the Top 50 was amazing, so for me it is a great honor to be voted number one,” Holder said in a statement. “It’s so unreal It will take a few days for the news to sink in.”

The submissions included several adrenaline-pumping scenes of daredevils going head-to-head with Mother Nature from thousands of the world’s top action and adventure photographers. An international panel of photo editors narrowed down the selection to the top 50 and overall winner.

Winners were also announced in 10 specific categories: Close Up, New Creativity, Energy, Lifestyle by Leica, Illumination, Spirit, Playground, Experimental, Sequence and Wings.

The top 50 photos selected by the panel are currently being showcased in a public exhibition in Hong Kong that runs through Sept. 15. The exhibition will travel to the U.S. and several of the world’s major cities.
