Snowfall often provides a wonderful palette for photographers.

After this week's winter storm, the first of the season to dump snow on New York City and much of the Northeast, we dug through the archives for a look at winters past. Snowfall often provides a wonderful palette for photographers. The white can make even gritty city streets seem pristine and peaceful.

The snow and ice New York experienced these past few days is nothing new. New Yorkers are used to heavy snowfall, and they've learned to adapt to brutal winter weather. Even in the early 1900s, when women donned long dresses and snow-clearing measures weren't as advanced as they are now, New Yorkers hardly let the weather slow them down.
